Biological systems have robustness and plasticity, which allows them to flexibly change their phenotype in response to environmental changes. The ability to combine robustness and plasticity is one of the essential differences between biological systems and artificial systems. However, the mechanism of how the complex network of chemical reactions enables such characteristics is still poorly understood. On the other hand, the availability of large-scale biological experimental data is making it possible to unveil the nature of dynamic behavior of biological systems. Our research team aims to understand the robustness and plasticity as universal features of biological systems, through both theoretical and experimental studies.
